Dimitri from Paris: the story of a devil of a Frenchman, born in Turkey, of Greek parentage, today having forged an International reputation as a truly French icon, like a bottle of No. 5 or a bag covered in monograms.
The second album is always the hardest, especially when the first was a runaway success like Sacrebleu, considered by one and all to be a must-have classic. Cruising Attitude is one of those albums that grow on you after several listens, once you have let its unique flavour take hold in your spirit. More intimate than dance, more unplugged than electronic, this new opus reveals Dimitri’s full musical maturity.
Aptly named with its cruising attitude covering a wide range from deceptively Disco titles (Not Quite Disco, Live Jazz, Paris Brooklyn), including gentler Jazzy moments (Okinawa Love, Merumo, Toi Mon Auto) through to a timeless cover of Syracuse (one of Dimitri’s favourite tracks) with Pink Martini putting in a special guest appearance.
The guest list will take you to London with Omar and Victor Davies, Paris with Helena Noguerra, New York and Portland with the Masters at Work and Pink Martini, not forgetting Tokyo with Maki Nomiya from the Pizzicato Five and lastly Caracas with Los Amigos Invisibles, a forefront group from Latin America.
A timeless album, drawing on and swirling up a host of genres and other essential features of so-called “electronic” music. Shedding samples, Dimitri leaves plenty of elbow room for orchestra compositions and meaningful meetings with talented
musicians. With travel-inspired influences and nostalgia for an era in which taking wing with an Air France Caravelle was a fully-blown adventure, like becoming an air-hostess, every young girl’s dream.
