Description
On Sunday 21st October 2007, The Australian Entertainment Industry rallied in support of one of Australia’s biggest rock stars of the 1960’s & 1970’s, Max Merritt, who after being admitted to a US hospital in April suffering from kidney failure, had fallen on hard times. A benefit, ‘Concert For Max’ was staged at the Palais Theatre, in St Kilda, Victoria and the 3000 seat venue played host to many of Australia’s top recording artists and musicians. The artists, musicians and many other services including designers, printing, publicity, audio, lighting, video, stage gear, road crew , catering were all donated in support of Max Merritt.
A number of artists flew in from around Australia and from overseas for their performances, others changed their work schedules to be there on the night. It was an enormous labour of love, thrown together by Max’s long time friend and manager Wal Bishop, with many spine-tingling performances, from the opening harmonica playing of Spectrum’s ‘I’ll Be There’, through to Peter Cupple’s rendition of ‘Slippin’ Away’, right through to the Finale, making this a truly memorable benefit concert in front of a packed house. The concert raised over $240,000.00 and the feeling from everyone in attendance, from artists through to the fans was they “wouldn’t have missed it for the world” !! Love ya Max!!
