Taking a job as a companion to her wealthy widowed aunt, Lizzie Martin, a country doctor's daughter, enlists the aid of her childhood friend, now Inspector Benjamin Ross, to investigate when the body of her predecessor, a young woman who supposedly had run off with an unsuitable man, turns up in an old abandoned house, in a Victorian mystery.
