Having reached their third grand final in five years, St George showed the benefit of experience in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of the SCG when they shot out to a 17-2 halftime lead against a nervous young Canterbury-Bankstown outfit that had surprised everyone by being the first side ever to come from fifth spot to be there on the last day of the season. St George eventually ran out 17-13 victors.
