They create emotions second to none and a reputation amongst soccer 'afficionados' as the best in the world. The colourful style and attacking flair have long been adopted by other nations who aspire to their level of success.

Pele, Maradona, di Stefano, Schiaffino, Asprilla and Ronaldo are but a few of the names that have dominated world football for over sixty years. Whilst Brazil and Argentina are seen as the enduring powerhouse, others on the continent are now staking their claim.

Latin America's volatile history and fiery mix of races from all parts of the globe are seen as the roots of their success. Negro, Indian and European have all contributed in physique, attitude and sophistication towards the social and sporting styles that now exist within the continent. The exuberance and musical rhythms of its fans symbolises this only too well.

Without exception, 'futbol' is the most important event in all families, regardless of sex, race or creed. It is more than life or death, it is everything. Where hereos are treated like demigods and losers instantly forgotten.

CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD is an exciting documentary series that captures not just the stars of today, tomorrow and yesterday, but the history, culture and social background of the leading teams and personalities throughout the continent, where the rivalry amongst the various nations has invariably sparked conflict on and off the field, even resulting in war.

Producer-Director-Writer Rod Hay has a long involvement with the game both as filmmaker and player. He produced a similiar programme on African football for USA 94, entitled Sleeping Giants.
