Description
Philip Pickett and the New London Consort present a collection of songs from the Carmina Burana manuscript on this 1986 L’Oiseau Lyre recording.
A virtuoso of early vocal music, Catherine Bott joins Micheal George and other singers performing regularly with Philip Pickett and his New London Consort. The instrumentation employed here includes harp, rote, lute, gittern and rebec.
The Carmina Burana manuscript was compiled during the first half of the thirteenth century in Bavaria, and contains the most important and comprehensive collection of medieval Latin lyric poetry. Comprising over two hundred pieces, the subject matter is hugely varied, from love songs, drinking and gambling songs, to moralising songs and religious plays.
One of today's most eminent advocates of period performance, Philip Pickett founded the New London Consort in the 1980s.
