Description:
After a false start as a performer (in 1953 she was part of the Memories of Al Jolson revue, only to return to waitressing,
disillusioned with show business) Shirley Bassey began the journey to stardom in 1955, appearing in theatres and television over the next twelve months before landing her first recording contract in 1956.
Her first single appeared in February 1956 (Burn My Candle, which was banned by the BBC because of the suggestive
lyrics) and she enjoyed her first hit the following year, with The Banana Boat Song hitting the top ten. That success prompted a number of recordings with American producer Mitch Miller, with If I Had A Needle And Thread being one result of these sessions. Born To Sing The Blues was Shirley's debut album release, issued on the Philips label in 1957.
