Ingmar Bergman examines the strained relationship between a reconciled mother and daughter in this intimate 1978 character study.Charlotte Andergast, a successful international concert pianist, is devastated by the loss of her partner Leonardo, leaving her in a state of loneliness and bewilderment. Soon after Leonardo's death, Charlotte's estranged daughter Eva contacts her and asks her to visit her home in small-town Norway. Having not seen each other for seven years, Charlotte takes this opportunity to attempt reconciliation.For several days the two women confront each other, revealing a lifetime's worth of repression. The resulting painful revelations are crucial for the future of them both.
