Description
For the first time on CD, Raven presents a definitive multi-label compilation from CHIP TAYLOR. Born James Voight (brother of actor Jon Voight, uncle of Angelina Jolie), Chip Taylor is an artist just begging for anthology. This collection examines the New York singer songwriter’s work from 1971 to 1979 – 23 essential tracks culled from eight albums originally released by Buddah, Warner, Columbia and Capitol – a fertile period that found him accepted as a peer of Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and John Prine and a prime architect of the burgeoning genre ‘Americana’. His songs are bound by a common thread of intelligent, visionary writing and performance in a ‘roots’ style that has stood the ultimate test of time.
Best known for the worldwide hits he wrote for others – ‘Angel of the Morning’, ‘Wild Thing’, ‘I Can’t Let Go’, ‘I Can Make It With You’, ‘Any Way You Want Me’ and ‘Try Just a Little Bit Harder’ – Taylor’s solo recordings are just as impressive. Starting with three tracks by his early ‘70s trio Gorgoni Martin & Taylor and moving through his seminal country rock solo albums, this collection features his own version of the perennial ‘Angel of the Morning’, Top Five Country hit ‘Son of a Rotten Gambler’ plus his biggest chart hit (#28) ‘Early Sunday Morning’. Taylor continues to tour with an active musical profile and has given his blessing to this project. Complete with detailed liner notes, numerous period photos and superb quality audio.
