Dylan leads negotiations between two parties, the Chichin and the Than, both of whom are claiming ownership of "Hegemon's Heart", a jewel-like relic sacred to the Than, but stolen by the Chichin. The "Heart" is safely on display in a museum, but Harper, Trance and Beka devise a plan to switch it with a fake, while Tyr has his own plans for the relic.

Dylan is asked to help escort precious cargo for the Inari people after their ships are attacked and destroyed. While visiting Andromeda, Major Whendar of the Inari asks Trance to visit Inaris in a diplomatic and educational role, but once there, she is captured and experimented on by a mad professor.
