Description:
Reissued for at least the third time on CD, and for the 12th time overall, African Herbsman is one of the most essential recordings of original Bob Marley and the Wailers material. As a release, African Herbsman comes from Soul Revolution, an album produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry, and a pair of self-produced sides including the original versions of "Lively Up Yourself," and "Trenchtown Rock." The album also contains original recordings of tracks Marley would revisit later on, including "Kayas," and"Duppy Conqueror." This is burning, steaming, heavy reggae, lined deep with Perry's barebones, hard bass style, and countered with the Wailers' stunning vocals. Peter Tosh's guitar playing and his harmony singing with Bunny Wailer are watermarks Marley never reached again, even with the I-Threes. The mastering job here is nothing short of stellar, bringing all of the Perry's "dirty" production style out of the murk and capturing his excellent vocal separations for what they are; instances of nearly angelic grace and pure dread groove. This set is also graced with no less than ten bonus tracks, including an alternate of the "All in One Medley," that features the original "One Love" track by the Upsetters called "Copasetic." The various dubs, such as those of "Duppy Conqueror" and "Trenchtown" (called "Grooving Trenchtown"), and Big Youth's "Moving" dub, as well as an alternate of "Kaya," Tommy McCook's "Lively Up Yourself," and Marley's "Keep On Skanking," are merely icing on the cake. African Herbsman is, far from what many of those who know only the Island work claim, not just some early, inferior, material recorded by a band in formation. The Wailers had been together since 1963, and were a fierce live and recording ensemble by 1971, when many of these tracks were cut. This is as essential as Burnin', Rastaman Vibration, or Catch a Fire, which is to say that this is essential, indispensable Marley; and revelatory Perry as well. Excellent liner notes make this version of African Herbsman the one to have.
