Hubbard played like a man possessed when he took the stage at San Francisco's bygone Keystone Korner on June 17th, 1982. Sax player Joe Henderson never showed, and maybe Hubbard thought he had to play for two that night. Backed by Billy Childs on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Louis Haynes on drums, Hubbard tore into the 18-minute opening track ("Softly as in a Morning Sunrise" like there would be no tomorrow. Surely, no one missed the saxophone that night.
Hubbard takes unbelievable chances, stretching his sound, fluttering and soaring through some of his more adventurous soloing. The musicians in the rhythm section know he's taking them into bold territory, and they ride hard with him all the way. Just listen to the exchanges between Hayes and Hubbard. ABOVE & BEYOND is aptly titled, as the album never lets up. The unstoppable tension builds from a blistering rendition of Hubbard's "Thermo" through the rollicking final cut, "Byrdlike." This is a staggering display of all that makes Hubbard such a legend.
