Description:
Jacqueline Du Pré's illustrious career was cut short by multiple sclerosis in 1973, but in the short time between her debut and retirement, she secured her place as one of the century's great cellists. This retrospective of her career, A LASTING INSPIRATION, features Du Pré performing some of the instrument's most famous and challenging pieces.
The first of two CD's is dedicated to orchestral works, leading off with the unforgettable first movement of the Dvorak cello concerto. Du Pré's power with the instrument is palpable from the very beginning. Her passionate playing on Elgar's cello concerto makes it one of the ultimate recordings of the piece.
The second CD features recital pieces and more intimate performances. The melodies of Mendelssohn's "Song without Words" resonate beautifully, and Saint-Saens' "The Swan" is rapturously peaceful. The sonatas pairing Du Pré's cello with Daniel Barenboim's piano are the sort of performances all musicians dream of achieving themselves.
