It had been 7 long years since the once proud and powerful Collingwood Football Club had played in a finals series and the Magpie Army was getting restless. The general, Mick Malthouse devised the battle plan and with captain Nathan Buckley, his able lieutenant Anthony Rocca and a fanatical band of soldiers willing to follow no matter the danger, the young Magpies turned the football world upside down. Written off before and during the season, Collingwood was living proof that guts, determination and self belief can overcome the greatest of obstacles. The emergence of youngsters such as Alan Didak, Mark McGough and Jason Cloke catapulted the Maggies into a showdown with power team the Brisbane Lions. In one of the greatest grand finals of the modern era, they fell agonisingly short but their courage will never be forgotten nor will the emotional outpouring at the end of the game which touched the hearts of football supporters.
