The problems of ageing seem an unlikely subject for television comedy but Mother and Son has been both immensely popular and highly awarded. Maggie Beare is an overbearing, eccentric who lives with her harassed son with visits from his well-off but larrikin brother and snobby wife. The deftly written script, which touches on the issues of caring for an elderly parent, leads to many comedic situations which are fully realised by a cast of top notch actors to make this one of the most enduring and popular pieces of television in Australian history.
